Leadership & Core Team

Brandon Shelton

Managing Partner

We see an opportunity in driven Veteran leaders. By properly supporting and connecting these individuals, we believe they will reach their performance goals, execute in their marketplaces and achieve their Missions faster than their peers.”

Brandon Shelton is Founder & Managing Partner at TFX Capital. He is a strategy leader, a problem solver, and a relationship builder. An entrepreneur himself, he led the grassroots effort that became TFX Capital in 2015.

Prior to launching TFX Capital, Brandon spent nearly two decades developing his financial, strategic and operational skills through various experiences in high intensity environments – from the military, pre and post 9/11, to the Wall Street crisis of 2008. Following his time on Wall Street, Brandon became a partner at a boutique strategy consulting firm where he used military principles to help client teams grow. He was later hired to drive growth, expansion and technology changes as the Head of Strategy at a multi-billion dollar company in North America.

Brandon serves on the Advisory Council for Veterans Business Affairs where he provides independent advice and policy recommendations to the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Brandon served eight years in the U.S. Army as an airborne infantry and military intelligence officer, leading teams on both strategic and tactical levels for various missions around the world. He earned a B.S. with honors from the University of Richmond and holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

Kevin Eckert

From the moment I learned about what TFX was building, I knew I wanted to be part of it. As a veteran working in the investment world, the TFX mission deeply resonated with me.”

Kevin Eckert joined TFX Capital in early 2018 with over 20 years of experience in finance, strategy, operations and investments.  A military veteran and startup advisor, Kevin initially got involved with TFX Capital as an investor in Fund I and has supported the firm with deal sourcing and execution since the firm launched.

Prior to joining TFX Capital, Kevin spent over a decade as a Managing Director for Stephens Capital Partners LLC and Stephens Inc. where he was involved in transactions ranging from startups to leveraged buyouts. He began his business career as a member of General Electric’s Corporate Audit staff and later joined GE Capital as a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, leading and mentoring numerous operational improvement projects as well as co-founding a new insurance business. Following his time with GE, Kevin founded a management consulting company that advised companies and government agencies mainly in the defense sector.

Kevin served as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.  He earned a B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.  Kevin currently sits on the Board of Directors of Veterans Bridge Home, a non-profit that connects transitioning military and veteran families to community-based resources. He also is on the Steering Committee for the Charlotte Chapter of Veterans on Wall Street.

Abbey Johnson

Director of Operations

We have a daily opportunity to create meaningful connections amongst founders, investors, industry leaders, and supporters. This collective and trusted community unites time and time again to amplify the impact we are able to have on companies in our portfolio.”

Abbey joined TFX in February 2018 after spending several years in San Francisco recruiting senior talent for early stage technology startups. Prior to recruitment and as a military spouse, Abbey spent time in a variety of industries and functional roles including marketing, project management, and sales.

Upon moving to Charlotte, Abbey was immediately drawn to TFX’s mission and leadership; she initially became involved with the firm in late 2017, assisting with what is now the firm’s largest annual event.

Lauren French

Military Spouse Fellow (Navy)

Venture capital is the combination of research + personality + dedication, both on the part of the investing team and the entrepreneur. Learning more about this combination of data-driven knowledge and personal conviction is what excites me most about venture capital and TFX Capital’s fellowship opportunity.”

Lauren French is an Army veteran, Navy spouse, and passionate problem-solver based in San Diego. She recently transitioned out the military after serving seven years as an engineer officer. Her desire to learn more about venture capital and the entrepreneurial ecosystem was sparked while attending the Stanford Veterans Ignite Program. Lauren graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2012.

Mike Fiuk

Student Veteran Fellow (Army)

The TFX Fellowship program provides a unique opportunity to learn about the venture capital industry through doing versus through the lens of academia or what is seen in the media. I am drawn to how venture capitalists approach solving complex problems alongside entrepreneurial teams and am excited to connect with an elite group of Veteran leaders and industry innovators.”

Michal Fiuk is an MBA candidate at Harvard Business School and an Army Veteran who is passionate about solving complex problems and helping teams overcome challenges to succeed. He served as a field artillery officer for over six years and led organizations across assignments domestically, forward stationed in Europe, and deployed to the Middle East and has worked extensively with allied and multinational forces. Michal is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and currently lives in Boston with his wife Rachel.

Rush Vann

Student Veteran Fellow, 2019 (Army)

Veterans are natural entrepreneurs - they just need to learn the vocabulary. TFX provides an extensive network and knowledge base to significantly shorten the learning curve.”

Rush Vann recently completed an MBA at Duke University and is an Army Veteran with a background in engineering and growing early-stage companies.  He served as an Army Special Forces Officer for over 6 years deploying to Iraq, SE Asia, W Africa and Europe.  He also conducted threat assessments of national level critical infrastructure with the Department of Energy.  After the military, he was a founding member of several startups leading operations, engineering, and strategy.  Rush is also a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and currently lives in Raleigh.
